TERRITORIAL SPIRITS     by Pastor Paul Locke

From the unity of a common language to the confusion of language at the Tower of Babel it is shown in the Table of Nations a change, “peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations each with its own language.” (Gen 10:5)  This establishes territories from which rulers rule and the wrong spirit was in the hearts of the people through inheritance as the sons of Adam.  The precedence of God’s people taking over territories ruled by evil spirits was the Promised Land.  The Israelites had to fight for the land and could not win unless God was with them.  God gave them a way to draw near to Him through repentance, observance of the Law, and annual sacrifice.  Christians as Ambassadors of Christ are authorised to take back territory through the power of Jesus Christ. (1Cor 15:24)

When the devil rules over a territory he exerts dominion, authority and power over the people.   He leads them on a path of destruction and God wants to release them.  The Gospel needs to be preached in these areas to bring about change.  Like the Promised Land we Christians need to enter and rob the devils house.  We do this by binding the strongman (Lk 11:21) because “He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world.”  The work of the devil is shown as; “Satan comes but to kill, rob, and destroy” so things like earthquakes, storms, and tidal waves that take lives are his work.  An example of working with God is clearly taught in the Bible when Joshua entered the Promised Land and defeated Jericho. (Josh 6:20)  The very next example with the city of Ai; shows what happens if God is not fighting our battles for us. (Josh 7:4)

A Christian example is the Demoniac who had a ‘Legion’ of demons which protected the territory violently against intruders.  Demons do speak and must reveal their name when commanded in the name of Jesus.  Jesus did not converse with demons, but commanded them and they obeyed. (Mk 5:1-20)  It seems that when we know the identity of the demons, then more power to us to defeat them.  There is a hierarchy of evil spirits and some are known as Princes of nations, whom Arch Angels fight on our behalf. (Dan 10:20)  Spiritual warfare is not against flesh and blood, but the invisible evil spirits in the heavenly realms. (Eph 6:12)  The eventual result of our work is the return of Jesus Christ that ushers in a new era, “Then the sovereignty, power, and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the Saints, the people of the Most High.” (Dan 8:27)

High Places (2Ki 18:4) are places where people worship other Gods through demons and an Evangelist should begin by pulling down the High Places in obedience to God.  The Church today is the spiritual Israel and for blessings to flow we must obey.  We do this by anointing with oil the door or gateposts of these establishments and by faith the anointing oil makes the premises most holy. (Ex 30:29)  This obedience is confirmed by God who anoints you as you do the work.  The Holy Spirit leads us to these premises that are sometimes hidden from us and they are all places that exert authority in the territory.  After doing the anointing work we then command the Head Territorial spirit to name itself, whom we bind and despatch to the bottomless pit.  After this then we can work successfully in the area we have taken from the enemy.
